Special Guest: Joy!

I met Joy at RT10 in Columbus, Ohio, and we’ve been fast friends since. She, Ali, and I are quite the trio, and they’re some of my favorite people in the romance community. (Incidentally, look forward to a joint post in June!) Joy is much more well known that I am in the romance community – she’s the co-owner of Joyfully Reviewed, so without further ado, what she has to say!

I been fan of romance books since I picked up my Barbara Cartland book at the age of 13, I know I am dating myself but there is no shame in showing my romance roots. LOL. (Personally, I don’t think that really dates you, Joy, because I picked up my first Barbara Cartland in high school… and many of her books are being released digitally now by her estate, so many more people can still be introduced to romance via her books!)

I progressed onto Kathleen E. Woodiwiss and never looked back. Romance novels appeal to me on many levels but today I will be discussing Books That Have Stuck With Me long after reading The End. These are the books that I can re-read over & over and they still have the same impact as when I first read them.

Whether it be a hot love scene, an unforgettable hero or heroine, a storyline that blew my mind or challenged me to read a genre to which I never thought I would, the following books hold a special place in my romance heart.

In Alphabetical Order:

Stephanie Burke: Keeper of The Flame

Jaci Burton: Summer Heat

Rhyannon Byrd: Waiting For It & Triple Play

Joey W. Hill: Branded Sanctuary & Make Her Dreams Come True

Dara Joy: Knight Of A Trillion Stars

Susan Kyle (aka Diana Palmer): Night Fever

Shelly Laurenston: Pack Challenge, Go Fetch! & A Pride Christmas In Brooklyn (I couldn’t find a link for this book. Gah.)

Lora Leigh: Wicked Intent & Marly’s Choice

Lena Matthews: Steven’s Salvation

Cheyenne McCray: Wildcard

Shannon McKenna: Something Wild

Bridget Midway: Corporate Seduction

Lisa Marie Rice: Midnight Man

Violet Summers: Velvet Submission

Kathleen E Woodiwiss: The Flame and The Flower

For Keeper of the Flame by Stephanie Burke: An alien male, from a planet that is run by women, that lands on Earth, about to give birth, yes I said give birth, need I say more? This was my very first e-book purchase ever. I was bored of the same old same old stories that I was reading in print at the time, went looking on the net for new authors and ran across a cover that looked like it had a black heroine on it. I said to myself, she must have a tan because I had never seen a person of color on a romance book up to that point. I ran across this thing called E-Books, intrigued I investigated further, low & behold, yes the heroine was black. Stephanie Burke had me at hello with the blurb and I have never looked back on e-books since. Flame is an Alpha Male but he’s vulnerable given his condition and he has to depend Kendall for his & his children’s survival. Stephanie Burke suspended my disbelief and took me into a world that I not only enjoyed but wanted to read more about.

And with Jaci Burton’s Summer Heat, Hero Aidan Storm (get it? I love it!) is from a family that can control the weather. Come on, how could you not want to read a paranormal with a storyline like this? Oh, the endless possibilities of naughtiness, teehee. Aidan uses his powers to get closer to Melissa Cross, our heroine, who is not prepared to handle this oh so sensual man. There is a scene in a casino that still makes me shiver. Jaci Burton pens heroes that make me melt, they aren’t afraid to admit to their mistakes and make it up to their women in ways that make me tremble : )

What are some of your favorite Romance Books That Have Stuck With You and why? (Isn’t this the perfect follow up to Thursday’s post? Joy went with something you’ve already been thinking about! Also, we may or may not be adding things, because Joy sent me this post, then was called away- friend emergency. :X)

ETA: Joy has generously decided to do a few giveaways, so comment comment comment!

Wow, a lot of fantastic authors listed above! Rather than take up a page (or more) currently two authors jumping to mind that I am very fond of that write in a way you simply cannot put the book down and can re-read over, and over with the same awe inspiring effects are…

Shayla Black (Wicked Ties and Decadent are my favs)

    and

Juliana Stone (His Darkest Hunger and His Darkest Embrace)

    Why?

The build, the angst and all the delightfully sinful things that go wrong. Assumptions that cause chaos in the characters lives!

hmm, for me… off the top of my head… Heartbreaker by Linda Howard. There’s a scene where he finds out she’d been abused by her ex in the past that just touched me… I also loved the scene where he realizes he loves her… ooh, and the ending was great, too.
Also, Colters’ Woman by Maya Banks… besides the hot sex ;)… I just loved the brothers *sigh* and wanted to be Holly.
ooh, btw, I love Night Fever by Susan Kyle… of course, I love all Diana Palmer’s titles under Susan Kyle.
I’m going to have to try the titles you mentioned that I have read before 🙂

    Hi Joy!!

I think I have read at least one book from everyone on your list and loved each one.

These are just four of my favorite books of all time:

Emma Holly-Velvet Glove, Cooking Up A Storm etc.
    Sharon Cullars-Again
    Linda Howard-All the Queens Men
Robin Schone- The Lady’s Tutor,Gabriel’s Woman

These books are my favs because they were the first to introduce me to something new.

Schone and Holly were the first authors that I read where the women take their sexuality into their own hands. No coercion needed because more than likely it was their kinky idea in the first place.

I wanted to be John Medina’s wife. That is all.

Sharon Cullars’ Again was the first IR novel that I read where the main angst for the couple was not race. For that she will always be an auto buy for me. It also helps that she knows how to write romantic and engaging stories.

Lena Matthews, Stephanie Burke, Joey W. Hill, Claire Thompson, Vonna Harper, and Beth Kery are some of my new favorite authors.

There are so many more books that I can mention, but my brain is so fried from today’s activities that I cannot think of anymore. lol

Flame and the Flower, my all time favorite. Also love The Secret and Prince Charming by Julie Garwood. I can never hear anyone say, “For the greater good,” without thinking of Prince Charming and the hero asking a question to the heroine about the twin babies in the story, “Which one’s greater and which one’s good?” That line has always stayed with me, because it was asked at the right moment in the story. I’ve often wondered how long Ms. Garwood held onto that line before finding exactly where she wanted to use it.

    Great post!

No longer favourites, though they still hold a place in fave books, are the Promise series from Sarah McCarty and the Horde series by Sherri L King from Ellora’s Cave.
I was in a bit of a rom reading funk at the time and they were so different to what I had been reading.. And they have stuck with me because of that, and because they opened me up to a brand new world of epub books.. and were the start of a ridiculous sized collection.
Thank goodness it not a print collection. LOL

Great post and I now have a few more books to read. I had always wanted to read Keeper of the Flame, but just wasn’t sure if I would like it. You’ve definitely made me a believer. So, I picked up my first romance novel at 14, it was a Cassie Edwards book…and I was hooked for life on romance. I’ve probably read more than 5,000 novels. Yeah, it’s just that bad…I mean good!

I love everyone’s picks…Kathleen W. was my first author that drew me into the historical genre. The came Joanna Lindsey…and a bookaholic was born. Julie Garwood, Iris Johansen, Joan Hohl, Diana Palmer…Now I am into the Paranormal romances Shelly Laurenston, MaryJanice Davidson Michelle Bardsley – all have me laughing so hard I cry.

It seems to me, I read and book and I have another favorite. Right Now Sherrilyn Kenyon and Christine Feehan and Deborah Cook are must reads for me.

One anthology that I read in the last year was INKED…I felt that it was one of the best anthologies I have read in a long while(every story was really good!).

I found Iris Johansen via the Loveswept line, eventually stopped buying when she went more into mystery.

Joan Hohl’s Desires – loved them

Diana Palmer – I know it is the same story over & over but I just can’t seem to quit her.

Shelly Laurenston’s humor is just like mine & I can see myself or friends of mine in her characters.

My firstromance book ever was Shanna Kathleen E. Woodiwiss and I read thousands of times! I can remember when I was looking for more books in that style that a whole new world opened up for me and I didn’t have a clue it even existed. 🙂 I have to admit though her books are not my style any longer.
Lisa Kleypas belongs to my auto-buy authors. I just adore her books! Suddenly You is one of my all-time favourite books ever!
Another book I always love to read again and again is Unlawful Contact by Pamela Clare. Her books rock so much! They’re so intense and full of conflict and very hot. That’s what I want in a good romance novel!

Jennifer Colgan’s Rogue Theta made me cry. In a good way. 🙂
R.G. Alexander’s Possess Me has one of the sexiest heroes ever written-actually, a few of them-it’s a three novella anthology. But there’s no one like her Bone Daddy…
And I love Nora Robert’s Three Sisters trilogy-I’ve read them over and over.

Mary Balogh’s Huxtable series was the first romance series I ever read and I loved book 3, At Last Comes Love. Historicals sucked me in quickly but until Julie James I always thought I’d NEVER like contemporary romances. When I read Practice Makes Perfect I laughed and was so drawn in by the characters pranks and quips that it hands-down changed my mind on that account. And thanks for introducing me to Marie Force & Love at First Flight, Lime! Because she’s the other contemp rom author I now love:D

I read all of the Kathleen Woodwiss books at the age of 12 or 13. I was an avid reader and mom never censored me lol. I love most of the authors Joy reads and as an aside I first “met” Joy in an online chat for Shelly Laurenston and she did two thing that night that shocked me she licked me and gifted me with the Shelly Laurenton’s book that she won cause I hadn’t had the pleasure of reading any of them. Hooked me good there. I’ve bought and read everything Shelly’s written since. Joy are you going to Lori Foster’s gettogether in June. Hope so. While Woodiwiss was certainly one I read, my early romance reads were the Loveswept series, including early Sandra Brown before she made the big time, LOL. I still have keepers from that era: Roberta Gellis, and Bertrice Small’s earlier works are on those shelves. I enjoy many of Lora Leigh’s books, as well as Jaci Burton. I always used to read Robin Schone and Emma Holly, though haven’t in a number of years. Cherise Sinclair is a new favorite, too.

Boy, my tastes sure have changed.

The Keeper of the Flame is a fave too. I really, really wish that Stephanie would write that 3rd story. Been waiting for years!

The Horde Wars are a frequent reread too. And I love Shelly Laurenston’s work. I have MaryJanice Davidson’s Undead and Unwed (the EC version) in ebook that I still read.

Dark Magic by Christine Feehan has spoke to me since it was originally released. I love all of the Dark series but this is my favorite. Dara Joy’s books caught my attention at a time I was refusing to read romance. The Breeds by Lora Leigh caught my mind before they were mass market. The thought of splicing DNA is what originally snagged my interest; now they and Nalini Singh Psy/Changeling books are preordered. Biting Me Softly by Mary Hughes has a passage (pages 103-104 on my Nook) criticizing the common names of sexual acts and body parts that is almost exactly how I think.

There are many more books that have spoke to me over the years. These were just the first ones I thought of.

My most favorite author is Julie Garwood. If someone asks for a recommendation but is not sure what they like yet i steer them to her. I love absolutely everything she’s every written and re read her all the time. I guess it’s the way she mixes things in her books. Her alpha males are just alpha enough with a bit of vulnerability and then there the romance and humor and sex scenes. However she does it i have always found myself drawn to re reading them and eager for each new release. If you know Julie Garwood she only puts out one new book a year and last years was delayed and not out til Aug this year.

My list of keeper authors seems to grow every few months. There’s Susan Mallery, Nora Roberts,Linda Lael Miller, Roxanne St Claire, Lora leigh, Christine Feehan, JT Ward Linda Howard. Recently added Lori Foster, Jill Shalvis, Julie James and Siera Dean. Probably missing someone still.

So many authors and books so little time.

My all time favorite “bodice ripper” romance was Defy Not the Heart by Joanna Lindsay (Ranulf will always be it for me even when played by Fabio) the spanking scene was quite dog eared when I owned it in paperback.

Shanna by Katherine Woodiwiss was one of the first romances I picked up and I’ve read quite a few of hers loved them all.

Recently I’ve been loving some m/m books, like the Faith and Fidelity series by Tere Michaels, Bound to Him by Ava March and Heart and Soul by Evangeline Anderson.

There are many romance books that have stuck with me over the years. They usually made the author an auto-buy for me.

Dirty by Megan Hart really hooked me with the complex, flawed characters and the depth of the story. I love her Spice books and can’t wait for Collide, her next Spice release. I love her voice as an author.

The Brown Siblings books by Lauren Dane are other favorites of mine, especially the second book, Coming Undone. I am counting the months until the last book, Never Enough, is released. I love how she writes family into this series.

I love the Sweet series of books by Maya Banks. It has the steamiest storylines. I haven’t picked up the latest book, Sweet Possession, yet but I plan to.

Jaci Burton is another favorite author. The first book I read by her was Bound, Branded, Brazen. I’ve loved everything I’ve read by her. I really enjoyed the first Play by Play book and am looking forward to her next book, Changing the Game, in that series.

Thank god for ebooks or I would literally have no room to live. Oh the keepers. I love Karen Robard’s Night Magic (rom sus) and was so happy to find it rereleased last year that I squeeeed in the middle of the bk store. It doesn’t matter that I know who the bad guy is I can’t resist that book.

Broken Boundaries (m/m) by Evangeline Anderson is my fav m/m ever and the bk that sold me on the genre. I’m slowly accumulating her entire backlist.

For historicals, it’s all Julie Garwood all the time. Prince Charming or Ransom FTW!

And I just discovered Bound by Honor (SE Jakes’ m/m BDSM) on a humbug and was blown away. I’ve owned it for less than a month and have reread it 4x already.

Kresley Cole and Gena Showalter’s LOTU bks are auto-buys/multi-reads.
