Yesterday I “met” a plagiarist

She doesn’t like me. I wanted to joke in the subject and say I made a new friend but … that would be a lie. I’m sure the internet will be all abuzz with things. And I’ve already seen two posts at least. It started at 6:46 PM on Friday.
[Sorry, for all the twitter screencaps, you have to read from the bottom of the image; that’s how twitter time lines work. Confusing, I know.]

To which I of course, being me, and stupid and silly, threw this out there after some conversation with Lorelei.

And boy, were people ever. You can check the other blogs and posts for that. I’m not even going to get into the onslaught tweets and such – however there are a few stand out incidents. And WTFery.

First of all, when she got back online, she immediately changed her profile. It had been this.

It has since been deleted, and her new [as of me writing this post] twitter handle is @BelTeltweets but she’s made this account protected. [You can obviously tell they’re the same though.]
While I was writing this post, she deleted that profile too! But you can see how it looked.

My issues, however, were that she was getting props – and possibly money for her plagiarism. You can clearly tell here that this is a copy of Lorelei’s All Jacked Up – with just (some) of the names changed. (Er, so photobucket shrank it; I’m sure someone will have it.) Anyway, this was her site: ihadthestrangestdream.weebly.com/ but it’s been taken down. You can run cache searches if you like. I decided not to add that screencap.

And here is weebly congratulating her on all the hits. And the link for advertising in the image.

So, that peeved me. But then what made me mad, was how Alison was acting on twitter. I couldn’t get everything because she blocked me. 😀 (And I wasn’t even being mean to her! No – seriously.)

And of course there was more. (And even more that isn’t shown here.)

Submitted without comment, this is, I believe the “cutting” tweet she was talking about. (She never did confirm though, before she deleted everything. There were a few other comments but more about cuts/papercuts because of her twitter bio.)

But the thing is … Alison didn’t just plagiarize Lorelei. She’d also plagiarized Renea Taylor. All credit goes to Sunita D and her super sleuth skills for finding this and pointing it out.

This is the story, and she’s changed Renea Taylor’s Beyond Right or Wrong from first person to third, and deleted some words. (Based on my quick comparison of the two – I got a kindle sample.) Apologies for the screencap; I have no idea what photobucket will do.

But more than that, apparently Alison has (had) a review site. (Where she plagiarized reviews too) Which she has since discovery also cleared. Here is just one example; and yes there were more. Her site was found by Shari Slade who did a lot of looking around the ‘net, when Alison decided to try and pretend nothing happened and she did no wrong. Awwww in the past ~half hour of my checking her site [since her removing all posts] she managed to add a wah wah cyber bullying post.

(I also have all the images full size, of course, but this post I’m sure is already miserable unwieldy as it stands.)

BUT WAIT. Yes, my friends, there is yet more. And this just makes me sick. Like, on top of how I was already feeling about everything else. (And considering I like to think I was one of the first to lead the twitter charge…)

W. W. Norton is very possibly paying for her MA. Or at least they may be helping/have helped her with that. No. Just. No.

And that’s all from me for now. (Maybe ever.) But… I’m sure there will be much more floating around the net soon. With lots of screencaps. But I just had to touch base with the WTFery. And… does anyone have ties with W. W. Norton? Is this the kind of person they’re hiring? Cuz… look I need a job, and I can at least not do this shit!

Ahem. Sorry – you know me. Can’t leave it on a heavy note.

But seriously. There’s so much what. the. absolute. fuck. going on here it’s mind blowing. And I’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg, I’m sure.

Why post this? First, it’s not ok. Next, because of how she’s handling this. If she would have just said “yes, I’m sorry – it was stupid, and wrong.” Then end of story. But all of this? Well, that just gets my back up. The deception and playing the victim and pretending it isn’t her? If you google – you can easily see how her blog, and twitter, and I’m sure other various sites were all linked. (Which yes, I and multiple others have sceencaps of, but I felt that unnecessary to add here. And you know – a google search will show you too.)

So.

And beyond that? Based on how she’s acting now? She’ll do it again. And I want each and every one of us to be aware.

[p.s. – again with the “not heavy” – I hate how the subject looks. I love random capitalization in post titles. And I feel like I shouldn’t do it here. But God I want to.]

What bugs me, is how Alison is claiming that she didn’t do anything, and someone else linked all this plagiarized stuff to her- and that she’s not the only Alison Gilmore out there! (And yes, she threw in that cutting thing too, which, no. Just no. Sure, the tweet was unkind, but in no way is it to the level she’s implying.)
But the point is – people found her by her profile pictures. [Catfishing has changed all our lives it seems.] So… unless she’s trying to say she has a doppleganger out there, with the exact same name, and interests, and hobbies, and schooling, and oh you know – then… I’m having a hard time believing her.
Although – I guess the only way to top off all this WTF is if she did have an evil plagiarizing identical [in name also] twin.

Which… 😀 is it wrong I’m kinda pulling for that now? Cuz that sure as shit would be a stranger than fiction of hilarious awesome story to tell. Heh.

Has anyone contacted WW Norton? Their website’s Contact page is a little tricky, but they have a Facebook page.

Anion, I’ve heard that someone is talking to W.W. Norton to try and see if Alison was indeed an intern and/or if she was offered a position.
However, it seems doubtful that she would have been offered the internship along with them helping her pay with graduate school. I don’t know if they did or didn’t for sure though – just what she wrote on her blog at this time.

I work in a school (In the US) and we hire interns during the school year and yes the Board of Ed does pay their tuition for that year since they are working as teachers without pay. So she may have an internship where they help with school costs.

Oh, JoAnne, I know for sure some companies help pay for school – I was just making a remark based on someone I had spoken to who had experience with W. W. Norton.
Of course, now people are wondering if she ever even did get the internship… I know other people are “on it” and I’m curious to see how this will play out – or, if it’ll just die out.

Anion has a good point. Sorry for what you’re going through. I’ve heard of school kids being expelled for plagiarism, journalists have lost jobs. Hope this gets resolved soon and she’s found out.

Thanks – but thankfully I’m not the one going through anything. (At least, not yet, and hopefully not ever 😀 *knocks on wood.*)
Did you see the comment/tweet from this morning where someone was mistaken and thought Alison had been offered a publishing contract?

There have been some comments where people are saying she doesn’t get one – in the future – because there have been ff plagiarists who were offered contracts “based on their popularity” according to the blog world.

thats weird that you just bought that up because yesterday,I reported to facebook that I thought and error had been made that a book I had just read a couple of nights ago was almost word for word a book that I just finished but that the authors name was different and could they check and see if they had inadvertantly put the book under the incorrect authors name, because if they had then she wasn’t getting paid and I couldn’t see her using a different name for the same book. They said they would investigate and get back to me.I don’t know if this is the same case you are talking about but I did give them the name of the author that I originally read and then the 2nd author and explained why I thought there was as error because I was familiar with the first authors work and so now Im waiting to get an answer from them..I do not know if this is the same case you are talking about and amazon said that if it could prove she did it ,they would not only remove her but they would fine her and her account would be closed but I didn’t even think about blogs and facebook ect, hopefully they will and will take care of it.Hopefully this is the same person so that there is not more people doing it but if it is,I hope your bringing it to peoples attention will prevent anybody else from doing the same thing.

      Hi Sharon,

Oh my. I almost hope it’s the same incident so at least there aren’t more plagiarists “doing their thing” right now, you know what I mean?
If you do think of who/what it was or can find it, I’d love to know.

Thanks! And I think the goal now is just to make sure Alison doesn’t do this again – because based on her behavior she’s not going to stop at the moment.

I was following this mess last night and it made me so angry, but more disappointed than anything else.

Karma may indeed be a bitch, but she knows how to lawyer up. Taking another person’s words and passing them off as your own is plagiarism. To make it simpler – it’s STEALING. It is as dishonest as walking into a convenience store and taking money from the register, without permission.

Being called out for being a plagiarist, or THIEF, is not bullying. It is reporting a crime.

The “silver lining” if it can even be called that, was seeing other authors, fans, bloggers and reviewers rallying together. We KNOW what it takes to write a good book, because we’ve read them. We KNOW how many hours authors devote to their craft. We KNOW how personal the process can be and how the relationships they (and we, the fans) build with their characters.

It was gratifying to see that there were more people on the side of honesty and justice than breaking the law. Maybe it will serve as warning to anyone who may be thinking of copying someone else’s work and passing it off as their own. DON’T DO IT. Do your own work.

      Michelle,

I am bad bad bad, and the “lawyering up” threats made me laugh. 😀
What bothers me a lot – beyond all the initial bad behavior, is how she’s trying to play the victim.

And I think everyone handled themselves incredibly well on twitter last night – no threats, no flaming, and so forth. I hope that continues – we just want her to stop (and apologize ideally) – not destroy her, you know?

All I *know* was that when her website was still up yesterday, it linked to a FB profile that showed her a member of an English lit group. Maybe 75% of the group members (there were 44 of them) listed themselves as members of Anglia Ruskin University. They posted about assignments and papers. Our girl Alison had a photo of her logic assignment, which made me laugh. So, no, haven’t seen her list that school in her own profile, just that FB group page and her deleted twitter comments about life in Cambridge. And, yes, I spent last night looking that girl up.

That’s def her. Whilst I was doing some of my own plagiarism shaming on Twitter (I didn’t directly tweet her because I didn’t want to be blocked before I could investigate), I looked at all her pictures and watched her feed. She had a pic that said (I’m paraphrasing), “Goodbye Cambridge.” I also saw pictures of her, or what she claimed was her, and they match that Google acct.

I’m happy you blogged about this. Everyone needs to be aware. I am still so upset about this, about her reaction… about the way “her professor” demanded I take my post on the matter down with thinly veiled legal threats.

I didn’t even know about the apparent manuscript deal she’s got. How can anyone know she actually wrote it. This makes me three times as angry, if that’s even possible.

This girl is vile. She is no victim. There are two (known) victims here – Lorelei James and Renea Taylor. She is right about one thing, karma is really and she will get what she deserves. Obviously she doesn’t have a repentant bone in her body.

The only upside is how amazing it is that all the writers and readers got together. At least something about this debacle is heartwarming.

rilzy – your post was great! As for the manuscript deal … maybe you know something I don’t know at this time? But if it’s based on things said this morning – I believe it was just a mistaken person, and people were kind of going based on what was heard – a bit like telephone.

I’ve been catching up this morning, and I wish I’d have paid more attention last night so I could have clarified. It was certainly never my intention to encourage Alison to harm herself. I *thought* I was just being a smart-ass because her profile said she was a papercut survivor, and because she’s clearly an emo-basketcase with plenty of issues and an attention-seeking personality.

And before anybody jumps on me and says that cutters aren’t attention-seeking, please understand I don’t presume to call all cutters attention-seeking. They’re not. There are plenty of people who “authentically” self-harm because they’re in need of some kind of emotional relief; but in my experience, they’re inclined to keep the behavior under wraps, not wanting to broadcast it.

And then there are those who do it because it’s fashionable, because it makes people think they’re deep, conflicted, or whatever the hell. It’s the same kind of act, in my opinion, that would be committed by somebody who might brazenly steal another author’s work and post it all over the internet hoping that people will applaud her talent, letting the praise build her ego as if she had indeed written the work herself. It’s still a behavior screaming for professional help, but it’s attention-seeking none-the-less.

I blame shows like Teen Mom.

First I saw this post and I thought, “Holy shit, I’m an asshole!” But now that I’m reading about her twisting herself into the victim… and what-the-fuck-ever. Only somebody with a guilty conscience would have latched on to such a comment in an effort to deflect from her having committed a self-serving and unethical series of acts. I’m thinking it’s got to be some kind of serious personality disorder. That’s my casual layperson’s diagnosis. I don’t believe for one minute this was a “school project,” or that somebody else with her name was linking to her twitter. I found her twitter after clicking a link to the website where she’d copied and pasted Lorelei’s work. So… yeah. Whatever.

In retrospect, obviously my cutters comment only made sense in my head. It was insensitive to legit survivors of self-harm, but I knew that when I wrote it. Too often, I don’t think before I speak, it’s a character flaw. I own it. Sorry cutters. I should have been more sensitive.

I am a cutter. I read your comment. I took no offense to it. The fact that this person did, shows they are latching on to any and all comments that make them the ‘victim’.

You made a comment. Some took it out of context. You’ve explained the context. No harm. No foul.

angel – I agree. I think Alison is trying to make something out of nothing, just to play the sympathy card. Of course, with her trying to delete her internet footprint, people who only hear her side of the story will be jumping up to defend her.

      iamwritingvirginia,

I agree with you. I didn’t mean to call you out and definitely not to get into a cutting debate. More, that Alison was playing the victim and we were all wondering where that was coming from – there was another comment joking about her getting a [paper]cut while she was plagiarizing, but she said it wasn’t that one – we tried to ask her if it was yours, but she never responded.
[Here I’m extrapolating, but perhaps her lack of response means that we’re right and she didn’t want to own up to overreacting/trying to blow up the situation]

Sure, the comment may have been a little snarky – but whatever – not addressing that. (I made a comment about trade school, so no throwing stones here.)

If we’re right and this is the comment that set her off… it’s just further proof of how off Alison is. And also? Thanks so much for stepping up and commenting to clarify! <3 Gold star to you!

OK, just to clarify, since some of the evidence and recap was a bit hard to follow, are you saying that Alison is also Ana/Nymeth from Things Mean a Lot? I read the blog and recognized it in the screenshot. Details from the Ophelia blog seem to match up with some details from Things Mean a Lot.

      Rachelia,

No – I’m not saying Alison is Ana/Nymeth. I was suggesting that Alison had also copied from Ana/Nymeth. They’re definitely two different people (according to @has_bookpushers) – and Ana/Nymeth had no idea she had been plagiarized until now. If a lot from the two pages match up … 🙁 that just makes it so much worse.

She is likely to learn a painful lesson in the future because so many companies now run internet background checks. This is going to be out there FOREVER! I can understand how she felt attacked because (don’t beat until you hear my reason) she didn’t see it coming. She should have because she had been contacted by the author and her legal reps but she clearly feels that she is above it all. Obviously she hasn’t been to author and book blogging websites. Readers are a seriously supportive bunch. She was lucky to get away as unscathed as she did. Now, she needs to disappear, shut up, hide, whatever and wait for this to settle down. And in the future, make sure your work is your own. Honestly, 50 Shades might have been fan fic in a former life but at least the author took the time to CHANGE the original work into something different.

Like the fact that Alison didn’t immediately take down her stories when the tweets started yesterday. She may have been out! Although of COURSE I’m not defending her – first, because she supposedly had notice, but even more, hello, she plagiarized and shouldn’t have done it in the first place, especially since she’s already graduated from university she knows better. – Although, you know, even an elementary school kid should…)

Sorry for the long post but I felt it was worth sharing to show others why I sympathise with you and why such action is necessary. I have been the victim on more than one occasion it makes my blood run cold when I see others work stolen. >:o(

I was very fortunate that fans of my my novels were using several other sites I’d never heard of and spotted my work. It was reported and taken down on sites like ;Facfiction’, ‘Mebba’ etc with an ‘Sorry, I just really liked it’ apology from the plagiarist. Cheeky mare! She was 14 so I gave her the benefit of the doubt and good talking to.

A few months later a very keen commenter seemed to always relating her life to the characters in my pirate series and chatting about her husband, the 5 bed house, the honeymoon swimming with turtles etc. Eventually I began to get worried and said to some other I thought she was a billy bull****er. She disappeared around the time the work of a fellow writer was found plagiarised on the same site mine had been on before. My ability to recognise a person from the way they word their comments started there. We had no proof that it was the same person as before but we would bet a fair whack of cash on it.

Shortly after that a new fan came on my page and was again started relating her life to characters in another of my novels e.g. her fiancé was named ‘Shane’ like my male love interest. I didn’t pay much attention at the time. She then announced a few weeks later she was pregnant with twins. (like my characters). She asked for advice on pregnancy and people gave it to her. 4 months later she announced she had given birth to twin girls and named them after my characters… alarm bells rung. Not only had she only been preggers for only 4 months but her partner was named Shane and now her children were named after the female protagonist and his sister.

It gets worse. I had emailed her a sneak peek of a chapter to her private email prior to this and when I set up my author facebook page it added people on my email list as friends. The email for her was for a 14 year old… and so was the previous plagiarist as she has emailed me to but I had forgot all about it! I challenged her and said you don’t need to lie or copy work, you will get more of a buzz writing your own. I offered to help her. She blocked me after sending an email denying it was her. BULL!

A year later another person comes on and sends me this… “Hey, SO i jsut wanted to leave a note and say that you are a fantastic writer and i read your whole pirate series yesterday… lol i should have been preparing for work today lol but your story was way better then that! So instead of commenting on every chapter i thought i would just leave a msg on here. Ella and Tom sometimes remind me of My hubby (Nathan) and myself the whole pantry cracked me up as last christmas eve the entire family was over at our house and i was grabbing something from the kitchen in the pnatry we have and Nathan came in and well…. It was our lil romp in the pantry lol, so that part really cracked me up and the tickling parts made me smile as im super ticklish like crazy so. And the fighting we do that a lot about sill things but we always end back up together and in the bed lol. You are an amazing writer and i will read your other stuff! You can check out my stuff if you wish it isnt as nearly as good as urs but it has some good parts lol.”

I had just wrote a story with a male lead called ‘Ethan’ very similar to ‘Nathan’ so alarms bells rang based on the writing styles, the typos etc. I went onto her page… there was my entire biog cut and pasted as ‘her writing style’. I couldn’t believe my eyes. A story was up as her own work, I checked it and recognised it as my friends story with just the two leads name changed (not the rest). I flagged it to my friend who challenged her. She immediately played the victim like your person above and denied it but at the same time removed it. My bio was ‘verbatim’ cut and pasted from my blog and she couldn’t deny it, it even had a typo I made in it! She blocked us from commenting and set about calling us bullies for challenging her telling people we were to blame for them not being able to finish reading the story. To this day she still has that profile open and its still full of lies. She puts pictures up of her and her husband on honeymoon. Someone ‘google imaged’ it and proved it to be someone else from pinterests hubby and stock photos. She removed them. They also checked the email address she had on her ‘about me’ and added them via facebook it led back to the same 14 year old from before, now a year older. Grrrr!

She always uses the name, Samantha, Sammie, Foxy, Kandie and it drives me insane that as writers we have to challenge these people ourselves. We go to the website and log a call, prove it is our work and still they don’t close the account until we come down heavy with the back up of other writers. If someone is a plagiarist the account should be closed. End of! Yes they can open another but it still creates a bump in the road for them. At the moment it is like a needle in a haystack trying to check sites for our work even though it is copyright protected.

Good on you for challenging her! As you can tell from above publishing online can bring out the looney’s either as trolls or plagiarists but for everyone of them we have a whole load of decent readers who make the hard days worth it and will always have out back. Shameful behaviour from people without a conscience.

      Airam,

Wait – so your plagiarist is still out there in blogland doing the same thing? O_o

Yes. The thing it she can’t even manage a capital ‘i’ when she writes comments so how she claims to have wrote books with grammar and sentence structure is beyond me. Apparently she has recently wrote a Pirate Story… I am hoping it is not mine again! I am blocked so can’t see. This is her profile of lies… Booksie still haven’t closed her down. http://www.booksie.com/kandie

There are 11 chapters up, I believe. What is the name of your book? I could check for you or I could email you the first chapter to see if it is yours. mary AT ferretrescue.com

Limecello, THANK YOU!!! Thank you for doing the right thing, thank you for calling out someone who clearly doesn’t even have a passing acquaintance with “the right thing,” and thank you for letting us know about it. Grrrrr!

bookchick, interesting. I wonder what her new twitter handle is. I might have thought she’d gone underground for a bit, but … you know I kind of doubt it?

I found an @AlisonG95 which is in the UK. And she talks about finishing exams. It sounds like the same girl but I couldn’t see her pic in the other one so I couldn’t be sure. It looks like the tweets are just about school. Not sure how common/uncommon the name Alison Gilmore is but God help the innocent ones.

bookchick I bet it’s a pretty common name – just a google search of the name comes with these results “About 2,190,000 results (0.45 seconds).” The girl you found on twitter, I don’t think is the same, based on the profile pics. 🙂 Of course, that’s just what I think.

I really have to wonder why this girl is so desperate to be on Twitter that she keeps opening new account after new account. You’d think she’d stay OFF the internet for a few hours.

Also, she appears to have left the academic group she was part of on Facebook.

I just keep checking this one person she continually follows. Said person hasn’t locked their account yet, so it’s pretty easy to find her when she switches accounts.

I am a Naley fan and had been reading bitched called fate on ff.net unaware that it was not Alison’s orginal work as I had not heard of Lorelai James. I was really enjoying the story and became suspicious that it was not her work when I was reading a chapter and instead of it saying Nathan it had Jack. It astonishes me the lengths of her lies to cover that she was plagiarising Lorelai’s work, as she went on to explain in the next chapter A/N after several people asked who Jack was that it was her nephew she was babysitting and must have put his name instead! I then looked on her twitter account and she tweeted something about jack her nephew so I thought ok maybe she is telling the truth, so I continued reading and followed her across to her weebly account.
Thoroughly enjoying her story I was disappointed and concerned when her weebly account was deleted so I did some googling, I come across all of the tweets from Lorelai’s fans and I am astonished that someone would copy WORD for WORD someone else’s work. She really fooled me and I am extremely angry at that, I mean the tweets and A/N that she had worked really hard on the chapters and such, it must be hard to retype someone elses work and replace only two characters names :-/

As much as it disgusts me for what Alison did, I am glad I found “her” fic as I now own Lorelai’s Rough Riders collection and I am thoroughly enjoying it (up to book 3)

Yay!!! Welcome to the romance world, Kirsty! We’re very happy to have you join us. It does suck that Alison copied Lorelei’s work, doesn’t it >:(
But, I’m so so glad you shared your comment, because at least something good has come out of this – twofold! One, that “we” get to see, and two, you have SO many more totally awesome books to read!!

And if you ever need/want recommendations, I, and so many others will talk your ears off with books and authors. ;D

Well, well, that twitter screen cap sure reminded me of watching Bridget Jones:
“Shazzer, jounalist. Likes to say f*** a lot.” 😀

I know Alison Gilmore personally and only just know about the situation now. You sure this is the right girl? Can someone email me please? I just want to get what I know, straight.
