Social Media for Social Good 2015: Football Edition

Hi friends! So as you know (maybe), I’ve been largely absent the past few months. This means I also missed my annual Social Media for Social Good Charity Fundraiser. I have to say, I’m tapped out. I know people care, but not being able to see it hurts. In the past we’ve supported relief efforts – twice in fact – from famine to child refugees from Syria, clean water for people, against human trafficking, for Native Americans, and more. We’ve done great.

SMSG15 Football

This time … I’m leaving it up to you.

Here’s what I mean. I’d like you to comment with your favorite non-profit charity. If you can, leave a link to the organization etc, so others can check it out, and make it easier on me.

Why do you want to make it easy on me? Well, I think you all know I love football. Like really love. Especially college football. What I’m doing this year is, for every touchdown the Buckeyes score tonight, I’ll donate $10 to a charity. $5 for a fieldgoal. (Hey any points should be rewarded, right?) Uhhh… if there does happen to be a safety I’ll figure it out later.

I figured I’d mix it up, so we hit a variety. What do I mean? Let’s say there are six touchdowns tonight. That means $10 to comment 1’s charity, $10 to comment 2’s charity, and so on and so forth. We’ll just go in order. If there aren’t enough comments to cover all the touchdowns, I’ll probably donate to UNICEF or something. If there are more comments than scores … well that’s cool too. I might donate up to $500. We’re playing this by ear. [Please one charity per comment though, and give others a chance to add?]

Sound good? Feel free to ask questions too. Let’s make this interactive and fun!

ETA: I’m leaving SMSG open through the rest of the season … and post season, so let’s home they win the championship again, shall we? 😉

Thank you, Ki <3 I’m really not, but it’s sweet of you to say so!

Also – is there a charity you’d like to mention? 🙂 Feel free!

I love that you do this… But I also love that you’re taking some time back for yourself! Since my charity is a local one (out of the war zone into the hills – http://outofawarzone.weebly.com/ ) then I will suggest Doctors without Borders as they work in conjunction with other aid organizations.then I will suggest doctors without Borders as they work in conjunction with other aid organizations to help refugees all over the

Hi Jenn! As long as the former is a non-profit I’m good with donating to them! 🙂
Otherwise, I love DWB/MSF too – in fact they were one of the SMSG charities I chose last year!

Thanks so much for your suggestions!

An awesome way to donate!! The Angel Foundation is close to my heart, they help provide for cancer patients and their families. My company sponsors families for Christmas, it warms my heart to see the patients and their loved ones happy. http://www.mnangel.org

Thanks Carla! I’m really happy with this whim because there’s no pressure – just joy in giving. I love the charity you chose too – I can’t imagine being in that situation and not being able to get help. The Autoinflammatory Alliance does good work. <3

I don’t know if you have twitter or not Carla, so I didn’t tweet this – but I donated – $20 because I didn’t like that $10 was just mailings.

N.B. I guess some people could call me posting the screen caps douchey – I’m seriously not doing it to be all “look at me!” I’m doing it to keep myself honest and accountable. So I can’t delay, forget, or renege.

Well, I don’t know how to post screencaps here (I may let Lime figure that out), but she and I had a friendly wager for the Ohio State/Illinois game today. Unfortunately my boys didn’t put too many points on the board, so I threw in four Notre Dame touchdowns and another ten bucks for Indiana playing their hearts out against Meechigan. So that’s $55 to the Polaris Project. Thanks for the suggestion, Amara!

I’m a big supporter of animal rescue organizations, and since we’re cheering on the Buckeyes, I’ll give a shoutout to Pet Promise in Columbus, OH. (Petpromise.org) We’ve sent several dogs from kill shelters here to them to find loving, permanent homes.

Thank you so much for doing this. In the darkness of the last day or so, it’s wonderful to see good people who care so much about others. <3

I love that you care. Every single year. You are awesome. I love Women for Women International. I initially leaned about it when I watched the The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo, where an entire war is being fought, and won, by systematically raping women and babies… The brutal rape crisis there is staggering and unfathomable. It has haunted me ever since and I want to throw all my money to the survivors there.

That is so awful and tragic. Thank you for bringing this issue and this charity to our attention, Pam <3 Women for Women

    You’re a rock star, Lime!

Charity: Water (which I think was a former SMSG charity), or a local food bank. We support Second Harvest out here 🙂

Ok so I either donated twice already … or did nothing. :X I’ll wait a bit to check my CC statement … and if nothing went through I’ll give it another go. 🙂

I really like them too, Dabney. In fact one of my classrooms when I was teaching SLJ got materials thanks to Donor’s Choose.
Before I proceed, is there a particular classroom you’d like me to give to?
