So for now this is a bit of a junk post – it’s the usual ALBTALBS post day but things were so crazy and I’m so tired so I’ll need to come back and edit. :X
HOWEVER. I wanted something to go live, and you know.
Hello hello my darlings! I cannot believe we’re nearing the end of June! Already! And… I’m going to be … older! However! The important person here today is Soren Summers! Yes! Another first time guest to ALBTALBS! So much fun and goodness this month! Everyone give Soren a warm welcome!
On Pride and Pen Names
When I was younger – much younger, way before I knew I could, or would ever write fiction – I wondered why people would ever want to hide behind a pseudonym. Isn’t your writing something to be universally proud of? The pen name, as it was, stood to me as a symbol of shame, even of cowardice.
Yet here I am today, struggling in my thirty-somethings to make a living off of pulling stories out of thin air and pressing them into little books that I fervently hope people will enjoy. And I do it all from behind the safety of a pseudonym. Initially I wanted to go with what I thought was the gayest pen name I could come up with: Apollo Summers. Interestingly, that alias had already been snatched up by a male entertainer based in Kentucky. Good for him. Continue reading →

Hi friends! We’ve got Vivian Arend with us today, and instead of it being her birthday, it’s mine! … Well, in a few days. But in ALBTALBS world we all know time is fluid. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I’m so excited to help Limecello celebrate her birthday. *blows noise makers*
I’m Vivian Arend, New York Times Bestselling author of contemporary and paranormal romance. I love writing about sexy cowboys and other blue collar heroes, as well as wolf and bear shifters searching for their fated mates.
On July 18th, I’ll be releasing the final book in my popular Six Pack Ranch series, all about the Coleman family in Alberta, Canada. Rocky Mountain Home features Jesse Coleman, one of the younger brothers of the Six Pack Ranch Coleman boys. Readers of the series have been waiting for Jesse’s story since he first appeared in Rocky Mountain Heat. (Which is currently free for kindle!)Continue reading →
Birthdays and older and being old and even though it isn’t my birthday yet I feel like I’m 100 and so tired and oh my gosh BIRTHDAY AND ALL THE STUFFS. Right? Right. On that note >.>, we have Sorcha Mowbray visiting today! I’m also leaving this as all I say because she even included the question and everything. Yay!
Birthday – the anniversary of the day on which a person was born or the anniversary of something starting or being founded.
It is interesting to look at the cultural norms and customs that are associated with birthdays. The expectations and rituals vary across countries, families, and companies/entities. There are rituals that come with every birthday and some that only come on specific birthdays. Mental Floss had an article about it that included things like “antiquing” the birthday boy/girl in Jamaica, or essentially dousing them in flour in an organized fashion or by ambush. Some Canadians grease the birthday boy’s/girl’s nose with butter, again another ambush moment. In Mexico a child gets a candy filled piñata, and in Vietnam they do not acknowledge the day of your birth. Instead, everyone turns a year older on the New Year known as tet–not sure how I’d feel about that one. LOL! Continue reading →
Hi friends! Yes! We’re in to June! Summer is almost here up North, and … O_O winter is approaching in the South. [Way north, way south.] As you see we have another first time guest to ALBTALBS, Christine Ashworth!!! She, like Nicole, was kind enough to volunteer to host a giveaway for all of you! (Thank you Christine!) She’s even got the question and everything, so I’ll leave her to it! <3
I absolutely cannot handle the fact that we’re into December. No. Unfortunately, it is what it is. (Which is a phrase I kinda hate but … it’s true, and fitting, and not a “passing the buck” when it comes to time. … Unless you’re Hermione. Or a Time Lord. Which is a Doctor Who thing, right?) Anyway. Today we have the fabulous Miranda Neville guesting with us!!! She has a book out at the end of the month so I decided to pounce on her early. You’re welcome. 😉
She also opted for a [non]traditional ALBTALBS author interview, because why not right? We only have 12 of these a year. If that.
Every single book release you have from here on out will hit #1 on the NYT and USA Today best seller lists. The catch is you can only eat pizza for the rest of your life. You can have regular pizza, and dessert pizza… but it has to be pizza. Do you take that deal? [And what type of pizza would be your “go to”?]
Are you kidding? Of course! My favorite pizzas have vegetables, hold the sausage and pepperoni. I love basil, goat’s cheese and sun-dried tomatoes on a thin crust.
What would your street [nick]name be? why? 😀
Posh Spice. Wait, that’s been taken. Can I be Champagne Neville? I’m not really a motorcycle gang girl. I aspire to bubbly and limos rather than beer and bikes.
You have the opportunity to be part of any TV show for one episode. (One that is on or off the air.) Which one do you pick, and what is your role?
I’ve just glommed the entire two seasons of Alpha House, Gary Trudeau’s Washington sitcom. Janel Moloney (Donna from The West Wing) plays a Tea Party senator in a crazy over-the-top way that looks like she’s having a blast. I’ll be Psycho for a Day.
What’s the most unique/strange silly skill you possess?
I’m very good at lighting bonfires. My friends call me One-Match. Come to think of it, that could be my street name. One-Match Neville.
What is one question you always wish as an author people would ask but nobody ever does?
Why are you so brilliant?
Your next life you come back as a dog. What breed do you come back as and why?
A bichon frise, because they always seem happy and everyone loves them. But I wouldn’t want the poofed up grooming; keep the fur short, please.
Which celebrity is your “spirit animal?” Why?
Emma Thompson. Because my daughter says so. (I’d never heard of a spirit animal and had to ask her.)
If you were a serial killer, who would be your target? And what would be your MO? [“Calling card,” what memento would you take?] Target = old men, young men, school children, college aged women, etc.
People who weep on reality TV shows. Death by flying object. My calling card would be a photograph of Heidi Klum.
Hostile alien invasion, or zombie apocalypse? Which one do you think is more likely to happen? Which one is scarier?
Alien invasion is more likely but zombies are scarier.
What’s the most interesting thing you’ve ever done for research? what’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned while doing research? In general, or for this book?
May I look into the future? I intend to take a balloon ride in preparation for a book about a Regency balloon race. I can’t really pick one interesting thing, but I can reveal that the Pantheon Opera House, built in London in the 1780s, had mahogany toilet seats in the ladies’ water closet. This fact does not appear in The Duke of Dark Desires.
Which do you choose – walk in pantry, walk in closet, or extra garage space?
Walk in closet.
Can you name at least three US Supreme Court Justices without looking?
Ginsberg, Sotormayor, Kagan, Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, Kennedy…. OK now I need to go check.
How did you come up with your author name?
Neville is a family name. I picked Miranda because I like it.
What was your favorite book as a child?
It changed from year to year with my age. Anne of Green Gables was a perennial favorite.
What is the super power you would most like to have? and least like to have?
Most: Invisibility. Least: X-Ray vision. I’d like to be able to eavesdrop but not to see people naked.
Man I should’ve asked Miranda the spammer question, don’t you think? I bet she would’ve given a super entertaining answer. 😀 So now, it’s up to you. What outrageous and silly question do you have for Ms. Neville? Or you can definitely ask her about her writing and her books. Speaking of, this is the book that will be out on December 30th.
Book Four of The Wild Quartet Wanted: Governess able to keep all hours . . .
Rebellious Julian Fortescue never expected to inherit a dukedom, nor to find himself guardian to three young half-sisters. Now in the market for a governess, he lays eyes on Jane Grey and knows immediately she is qualified–to become his mistress. Yet the alluring woman appears impervious to him. Somehow Julian must find a way to make her succumb to temptation . . . without losing his heart and revealing the haunting mistakes of his past.
Lady Jeanne de Falleron didn’t seek a position as a governess simply to fall into bed with the Duke of Denford. Under the alias of Jane Grey, she must learn which of the duke’s relatives is responsible for the death of her family–and take her revenge. She certainly can’t afford the distraction of her darkly irresistible employer, or the smoldering desire he ignites within her.
But as Jane discovers more clues about the villain she seeks, she’s faced with a possibility more disturbing than her growing feelings for Julian: What will she do if the man she loves is also the man she’s sworn to kill?
You can order a copy of The Duke of Dark Desires here. And of course, some lucky commenter is going to win her choice of any of Miranda Neville’s backlist. In print or in electronic book form! Whee!
I’m posting this from my phone at the hotel on 3G so forgive me. If there are issues I hope to fix them later! Xoxo
This month at Book Binge we’re hosting our second annual Digital-First Read-a-Thon. The idea is to read as many digital-first published books as possible throughout the month. To help people discover new digital reads, we share excerpts and offer giveaways. It’s a pretty fun time. Usually.
This month? I’m having a really hard time getting into the spirit of things. Why? Because I’m in the mother of all reading slumps. So far I’ve managed to read 3 books. Yes, 3. Normally by the middle of the month I’d have read triple that many.
I have no idea why I’m struggling to read. I want to read, but nothing sounds good. Historical? Meh. I burned out on those ages ago. Paranormal? Maybe..but what haven’t I already read? I’m kind of picky about paranormal when I’m not in a slump. Now that I am? Forget about it. I’m almost always in the mood for a good contemporary romance, but lately even those aren’t doing it for me.
For a few weeks I was really into NA (New Adult). I plowed through about 10 books and loved every single one of them. Even the ones I didn’t love, I still couldn’t get enough of (which I know makes no sense, but there it is). Sadly, I seem to have burned out on those, too. I’ve started four or five in the last week and nothing worked.
I’m a huge fan of re-reading. I re-read old favorites more than I read new books. Even that isn’t working for me this time. I’ve skimmed a couple of my old favorites, but I’m bored within minutes.
So what am I supposed to do now? I’m not really a t.v. watcher and I’ve tried other genres. I just can’t seem to get out of this funk.
What are your slump-busters? Do you have a go-to book or author? Or do you have some other method of getting yourself out of a funk?
Holly
And guess what?!? Holly is giving away a $25 Amazon gift card!!
So answer her question and give her ALL the (belated) birthday wishes! <3
What am I not done with? Giveaways. Of course. I um, dropped the ball on a giveaway – so obviously I need to remedy it. Also I didn’t think any of you would be complaining. 😉
… I’m right, right?
It’s probably for the best though right? Because if I’d remembered everything then we’d be at 44 for the Birthday Bash giveaway, and then I’d be all OCPD and not able to stand it and have to hunt down another author/giveaway… So really, this was planned! >.> Ok, so I can’t stretch it that far, but you get my point. It all works out nicely.
What’s this elusive book I’m talking about? Laurie London’s upcoming release!
Deep within the forests of the Pacific Northwest, the battle for supremacy rages on between two vampire coalitions:
Guardian enforcers sworn to protect humanity, and Darkbloods, rogues who kill like their ancient ancestors…
Hot-blooded and hard-edged, Tristan Santiago has an uncanny ability to see beneath the surface-a skill that serves him well as the Guardians’ region commander. But when a deadly plot against his fellow vampires is uncovered, he must turn to the one woman he can’t read: the beautiful yet mysterious Roxanne Reynolds, whose sensual presence soothes his tormented memories.
Roxy had put love before duty once before, with devastating results. But to root out a dangerous traitor in their midst, she must put her faith in Santiago, the one man skilled enough to break through her defenses. Posing as lovers, Santiago and Roxy work side by side-and discover a powerful craving that threatens to consume them both….
Do you read paranormal romances? Ever read any of Laurie’s Sweetblood books before? What’s even more exciting? This book releases on July 24th! That’s next week! Whee!
If your answer was “no” to either of the previous questions – what upcoming books are you looking forward to? C’mon – you guys have to offer me some benefit, right? 😉 What should I be looking for? Someone who comments is winning a copy of Seduced by Blood!
Whee!
(Or you know you could say nice things about me. Flattery gets you everywhere!

Now Alyssa Day’s prize is actually the winner’s choice of one of her current Warriors of Poseidon’s books – but I liked this cover. And you know, winner’s choice. Print and international is fine. (For most the books in fact.)

A whopping five copies of this book – to be given away here and on twitter. (I’ll figure out the division.)

Well, Kate Hewitt is awesome for offering this prize. I can’t find the book blurb though. I checked Amazon, used a search engine, Waterstones (which is what was supposed to be the M&B link) ended up at – and then her web page. So there you go. But this book is up for grabs, and that’s the important thing! You can also read an excerpt of it here. So that should help.
Erm, if anyone wants to hunt that down for me – not at the top of my list right now what with all the other books, but I’m sure it’s a great category romance. 🙂 And notice now this is one of the UK covers, not an American one? Anyone have a preference for types?
(This is an ebook prize)
The relationship is pretend. The chemistry…isn’t.
After her last job ended with a broken heart and a humiliating exit from the company, Shelby Leighton’s project management career is back on track with a new job and a high-profile project. The problem: her new boss is a little too friendly, and the staff is talking. Can you say, “déjà vu?” The solution: casually mention a fictional new boyfriend.
New problem: she’s expected to bring her new man to the upcoming corporate picnic.
Jake Magill doesn’t do relationships. It’s casual or nothing, but the hot blonde he’s been eyeing at the coffee shop sure is something. Especially when she confesses her problem, and he finds himself offering to act as her date.
Sounds simple. Stroll around the party with Shelby’s sexy curves clinging to his arm? He’s all over it. Until he meets her boss—the man who once stole and married the one woman Jake thought he loved.
Now Jake’s the one with a reason to pretend. If only to save his own pride…and Shelby from the predatory gaze of the man who could ruin her, and any chance of finding out if their fake connection is the real thing.

John Corcoran loved the isolation of the Shawnee National Forest with the crisp spring air, the sounds of nature, and the bracing scent of pine. Isolation is what movie star Jennifer Turner craved as well, an escape that only a weekend hike, a long and blissful distance from Hollywood, could provide.
Yesterday, they were strangers—until a fateful accident, deep in the forest and far from civilization, throws them together and plunges them both into darkness. For Jennifer it is as unnerving as the night itself, trapped in such close quarters with a man as mysterious as John. He is alpha: bold, rough, and masculine, but with a scent of firewood and spice she finds intoxicating.
In the dark, Jennifer’s nightmares spring to life. The only way to vanquish them is by submitting to blind, naked need. Now, as intimately close as a man and a woman can be, they find themselves alone, battling fear and vulnerability. Only an unexpected passion will comfort them—a sensual, raw experience from which neither is certain they want to be rescued.
This is a print copy for US only – sorry kids, but hey! Variety!

The last thing Valerie needs, after escaping an abusive marriage to an alcoholic and rebuilding her life, is a broody, secretive, standoffish man. But that’s exactly what she gets when she becomes a makeup artist on the set of a hit sitcom and draws the attention of the series’ star.
John Samuels hides a terrible past—a life of abuse and neglect. A successful acting career and the affection and support of cast, crew and friends, does nothing to convince him that he is anything other than an unlovable monster.
Will he learn that the life he’s been living has been built on a lie or will he be doomed to repeat the sins of his father?
In the wake of his parents’ murder, Matthew Graham must take the reins at the Circle Eight – a vast spread in the eastern wilds of the newly independent Republic of Texas. He also needs to find a wife in just thirty days, or risk losing it all. Plain but practical, Hannah Foley seems the perfect bride for him…until after the wedding night. Oh – and to also help the process – please fill out this form for giveaway purposes. And remember to skim the previous posts – there are a number of open giveaways still. For those of you with questions on how this will be run, most of them are likely addressed here.
